Light-Driven Heck C–C Coupling Using CuO–Pd or Cu₂O–Pd Nanocluster Hybrid Photocatalysts: A Sustainable and Cost-Effective Approach

Tech ID: 25T214

Advantages

  • Uses earth-abundant copper oxides to reduce reliance on expensive materials
  • Operates under broadband light, eliminating the need for external heating
  • Achieves high reaction yields in shorter time (1.5 hours)
  • Avoids complex catalyst separation steps
  • Enables sustainable and cost-effective C–C coupling

Summary

The Heck C–C coupling reaction is widely used in drug and chemical production, but traditional methods rely on expensive palladium catalysts and high heat, making them costly and unsustainable.

This invention introduces two copper-based hybrid photocatalysts CuO–Pd and CuO–Pd that run the same reaction using only light. These materials are cheaper, cleaner, and eliminate the need for external heating or complex separation. The result is a faster, low-cost, and eco-friendly method to create essential chemical bonds.
